In 1990, Ken Mummery (Banker, Systems Analyst and Programmer) and Doug Ewen (a long time and industry respected luxury yacht captain) formed an ideal partnership for a project that would set standards in the yachting industry.
Together, they formed MSI Founders and began development of their revolutionary, vertical market marine software they named Boatswain*. Maritime Software International was formed one year later to market their software and services. This innovative PC based, on board, satellite interactive software would set new operating standards for the luxury yacht owner, captain and builder.
Boatswain was designed to track a yacht's maintenance, supplies and spare parts, as well as keeping the Captain informed. A yacht's maintenance supplies, and their on board location would be available at the press of a key. In addition, Boatswain would flag any maintenance not performed, and inform the owner within a prescribed time line. Keeping a yacht and her passengers safe, starts with a well maintained yacht.
When supplies are required, Boatswain Services would see to it they were dockside upon reaching the next port of call, anywhere in the world.
Comment:
In 1993, Doug and Ken closed their offices in San Diego to return to other pursuits.Like many others involved in the US boating industry, the ill conceived luxury tax imposed on boats with a value over $100,000, brought to a halt the boating industry in the United States. Over 300,000 workers, directly involved as well as those in supporting industries, lost their jobs! Most boat builders in this country closed their doors...some forever.
The wealthy, this law intended to tax, stopped any plans for a new boat or just went elsewhere in the world for their next purchase.
Today, the luxury and mega yacht industry continues to increase in this country. The tax is gone but so are some of this country's premier boat builders.
If you're a software investor looking for a good product with a vertical market, Ken and Doug, with permission from their families, may be persuaded to return MSI to a working business and continue to set world class software standards for this industry.
